Why Parents Say This Is The Best Bush Kinder Program in Canberra

What if your child’s classroom wasn’t indoors but out in nature, with space to explore, play, and learn from the world around them?

At Coombs ELC, Bush Kinder is the highlight of our week, and it’s not just the children who look forward to it. We feel lucky to have the National Arboretum so close, and two friendly bus drivers, David and Paul, who take us on our weekly trips.

As soon as the children hop on the bus, the buzz starts. Every visit brings something new: a trail to follow, a bug to look at or trees just right for climbing. It’s these unpredictable moments that make Bush Kinder their favourite part of the week.

A Nature-Based Program That’s Truly Unique

We know there are a few bush kinder programs in Canberra, but not many are lucky enough to have the National Arboretum in their own backyard.

Each week, our children get to explore this iconic space, walk through winding forest trails, and experience hands-on, child-led learning in the fresh air. From the moment we arrive, imaginations spark, friendships deepen, and the world opens up in a whole new way.

It’s not a set curriculum or something we ‘fit in’, Bush Kinder is a core part of how we teach and connect with children.

Why Bush Kinder Belongs in Early Learning

Bush Kinder is inspired by forest school models that started in Europe, where outdoor learning is seen as essential to childhood development. In Australia, it’s becoming a valued part of early education, and it’s supported by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).

At Coombs, Bush Kinder isn’t just an add-on. It’s carefully planned to support every part of your child’s growth. Children build confidence, connect with nature, and explore the world around them in ways that align with key EYLF outcomes like developing a strong sense of identity, wellbeing, and connection to their environment.

It’s part of how we create real-world learning experiences that stick with children.

What Makes It the Best Bush Kinder Program in Canberra?

Families often tell us that our Bush Kinder program stands out, and it’s easy to see why.

  • It’s the real outdoors
The children aren’t in a fenced-off bush playground; they’re out in nature, climbing logs, crunching through leaves, and soaking in the outdoors.
  • It’s led by the children
There’s no rigid plan. Some days are slow and reflective. Other days are full of energy. Our educators guide, but the children lead.
  • It’s part of their rhythm
Bush Kinder isn’t a once-off activity. It’s a consistent part of our weekly program, building familiarity, confidence, and strong connections to nature.
  • It’s filled with joy
From the laughs on the bus with David and Paul, to the quiet moments under a shady tree, this is learning that fills a child’s cup.

A Day at Bush Kinder

No two days look the same, and that’s exactly how we like it.

One week might involve building sculptures from bark and leaves. Another could be about climbing over fallen logs or drawing what we see in the sky. We read stories under the trees, go on quiet listening walks, and find bugs that spark endless questions.

Before children attend, families are given all the details and provide permission through our regular excursion process. We keep parents updated on where we go and what we get up to, so you’re always part of the journey.

We always come back a little muddy, a little tired, and a lot inspired.

Learning With Purpose

We respectfully acknowledge the Ngunnawal people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, learn and explore. Their deep connection to Country guides how we approach Bush Kinder – with care, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility.

We embed Indigenous perspectives into our learning and help children understand the importance of caring for land, water, animals, and each other.

Why Families Love It

The feedback from families about Bush Kinder is that it’s had a huge impact on their child’s confidence and sense of independence. Children who are shy in a room environment setting can often come alive during bush kindy. They form strong bonds with their friends, learn to trust themselves, and develop a quiet confidence that carries into every part of their day.

Bush Kinder gives children the space to just be, and in doing so, they discover so much more about themselves and the world around them.
